Isle of Wight Apple Days Festival

Schools & Apple Day Festival

A number of local schools are involved in the Apple Day Festival.
The main emphasis for our Apple Days is:

  • to celebrate and conserve the traditional and local heritage of Isle of Wight orchards
  • to support the planting of new community and school orchards
  • to inform and educate the community about aspects of orchard husbandry
  • to emphasise orchards as unique wildlife habitats
  • to link with other countryside pursuits
  • to celebrate local distinctiveness and culture as highlighted in Agenda 21.

At present local schools visit the orchard in mid September and are shown different apple varities, Island apple trees, apple picking and sorting as well as the traditional methods and skills of apple husbandry. Pollination and local and migratory wildlife are also discussed. The children then practice some of these skills in a practical apple picking sesion.

Work from these sessions include sculptures, paintings and illustrated poetry which are displayed on Apple Day.
